The initial consultation takes up to 90 minutes and includes taking a full medical case history. This not only looks at the current complaint but also details of your past medical history, family medical history, diet and lifestyle. Your blood pressure is taken and other examinations may be carried out if relevant. In some cases this may require you to undress to your underwear.

If you are taking medication given to you by your GP or a consultant it is helpful if you bring this with you.

Everybody is different and the aim is to build as full a picture of you as possible to help identify the underlying causes to your problems. Medicines are then dispensed and advice given on diet and lifestyle where appropriate.

Follow-up consultations last up to 30 minutes and are aimed at checking progress and adjusting medicines as necessary. As your condition changes and improves so your body’s requirements will change and this will be reflected in the medicine.

The first follow-up is generally 2-3 weeks after the initial visit, with further appointments at monthly intervals or as required.

The length of treatment depends on the condition being treated. Chronic conditions may take some months or longer to treat but the aim is a return to full health wherever possible.

For minor health problems such as coughs and colds, muscle strains, sprains, insect bites, bruises and many other First Aid-related issues it is possible to see the herbalist for a short consultation and associated treatment.

If, however, the herbalist believes that there is an underlying cause that requires further investigation then the patient will be advised to book a longer appointment.

Any presenting problem that could be considered a medical emergency will be referred immediately to the local NHS Accident & Emergency department.
